1912 - JOHN HARPER:
In the early hours of the morning (2.00-2.30am) Pastor John Harper died in the icy cold waters of the North Atlantic. The Titanic had sunk and its last hero had died with it.
Harper had given his life jacket to an unsaved man, for he knew his destiny. He urged people to flee to Christ for salvation, as he had done throughout his many years in the ministry. He had preached on street corners, in pulpits and now in the icy grave. As he drifted in the water he bore witness to an unsaved man pleading with him to exercise faith in Christ. Finally Harper lost his grip on the drift wood from the Titanic and sunk in the Atlantic, having breathed his last.
The man to whom Harper had bore witness in the middle of the North Atlantic was later rescued by the S.S. Carpathia. He testified that he was the last convert of John Harper before he died.
Harper had been born in Houston, Renfrewshire, on May 29, 1872. He was born again during March 1886, when 13 years of age.
Three times in his early life he had almost drowned. When aged two he fell into a well and was revived by his mother. At age 26 he was taken out in a rip while swimming in the ocean. At age 32 he was on board a sinking ship before being rescued. Was it coincidence? No, providence.
He was a Calvinist Baptist.
