155 - POLYCARP:

On this day in 155 AD, Polycarp, the Bishop of Smyrna, is thought to have been martyred. He was burnt at the stake aged 86.

 

303 - DIOCLETIAN PERSECUTION:

On this day in 303 AD, the Diocletian persecution began. This was one of the last and most terrible of the Roman persecutions of the church.
