This is a skit on army life. One is never satisfied with one's lot and although this piece seems to be all complaints it was quite a good life. A bit of danger at times but it is possible to come through in a fair condition. This goes back to the beginning of 1938 when I was waiting for the boat to come home.

Once you're in you can't get out,
So what's the use to rave and shout.
I've seen fools do the daftest
things
But God only knows the trouble it brings.
'Twas April 1st
the day I joined,
I little knew what was in store.
I had a living
but wanted more,
I thought then, what a life to live.
For a chance
like mine, what would some men give
Let me tell you now, You're a lucky
guy
To escape the life of do or die.
We're hunted from pillow to
post each day,
It's life alright in the army way.
I'm too browned
off to say or think,
What I might do if I took to drink.
Get up,
get out, get on the square,
If you turn 'Bolshi,' you're in a snare.
You do as you're told, good Lord yes,
Twenty eight days is one helluva
mess.
The orderly Sergeant calls the roll,
Its on the up and
up, you can't cajole.
It's all very well to hear them say
"Marlish
that" I'll have my way.
You're something that's here, to do your
told,
The army prestige you must uphold.
At present I'm in the Land
of the Sphinx,
It's not full of romance like some people think.
A terrible place that stinks like Hell,
Of sin or filth I'm hanged if
I'll tell.
Now there's been trouble in Palestine.
All my pals
went fit and well
One didn't come back, he maybe in H...
What's
it worth when all's said and done
You get just the same, if you've lost
or won.
I've had my share of trouble and strife
To last me,aye,
for the rest of my life.
I'm going home, and it won't be too soon,
A man that signs on is a blooming buffoon.
So sign on the dole you get
more fun,
