Krakatoa
THE WORLD'S GREATEST VOLCANO
Welcome to my 'Krakatoa' page. I have been fascinated by Krakatoa for many years.
What's on This Page:
INTRODUCTION:
Krakatoa (originally Krakatau) is to be found in the Sunda Strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra. The area of Krakatoa is now found in the Ujung Kulon National Park in Indonesia.
The island of Krakatoa is no more, having blown itself into oblivion in August 1883, in the greatest volcanic eruption in recorded history. Following the eruption there was little remaining of Krakatoa, though a section of the main part of the volcano still remained - Rakata. Rakata was the tallest peak of Krakatoa.
Some 6 million cubic miles of Krakatoa blew apart after several months of volcanic activity of increasing violence. The final explosion created the loudest noise every heard, having been heard in Perth (Australia) and the island of Rodrigues (Mauritius) of the African coast. Shock waves travelled back and forward across the globe some seven times. Tsunamis generated by the eruption killed over 36 000 people in surrounding areas and was noticeable all around the world. For months following the eruption, ash was caught up in the earth's atmosphere affecting climate, even lowering the temperature for some months.
In it's place, Krakatoa has given 'birth' to a child known as Anak Krakatoa (child of Krakatoa). Anak Krakatoa began it's rise above the ocean in 1927 and last erupted in 2001.
