Stroud History - An Historic Australian Country Town

This is my growing page on the history of Stroud, a town of about 550 people situated on The Buckets Way, about 75km north of Newcastle and 50km south of Gloucester. Available from this page will be a more detailed history of Stroud - as soon as I finish it.

ANGLICAN CHURCH:

The Anglican Church at Stroud is known as 'The Church of St. John the Evangelist.' It was constructed by the Australian Agricultural Company in the 1820s. A history of St. John's Anglican Church will appear soon.

BUILDING NEAR ANGLICAN CHURCH:

QUAMBI HOUSE:

Quambi House is also located next to the Anglican Church at Stroud. It was built by convicts in 1831 to replace a small wooden hut that had functioned at the school building for the A. A. Company. It was later enlarged in order to house the school masters. The top story was added in 1841. The materials used were made from local resources. In 1888 it became a private school because a state school had then opened. Finally it became a private home in 1900. It is now the town's museum.

SILO HILL:

Silo Hill was the location of the A. A. Company's grain silo storage area. There are some eight underground silos at Silo Hill, guarded by two sixty pound cannons. These cannons were originally set up in Sydney to guard the harbour during the Crimean War (1855-56), before being sent to Fort Scratchley in Newcastle. In 1909 they were sent to Stroud.

The silos were built in 1841 under the direction of Captain Phillip King. They were built by convict labour with bricks made of local clay. Seven of these silos are now sealed for safety reasons, while the last is open for public inspection.
